I often get asked what is my favourite summer outfit. People wonder what garment I would choose if I need to choose just one. For me, the answer is very simple – it will most certainly be a dress!
I would pick a dress all year round really, but there is something even more special about the summer dress. I guess it is the combination of both the loose-fitting flowy designs and the soft touches of silk and chiffon.
Silk is certainly my preferred fabric for a summer dress. It is always trendy and stylish, and it has been so for centuries. The earliest example of the fabric dates back to 3630 BC and according to a legend it was developed by the Chinese empress Lei-Tzu. Silk was originally reserved for the Emperors of China for their own use and gifts to others, but spread gradually through Chinese culture and trade both geographically and socially. Due to its texture and lustre, silk rapidly became a popular luxury fabric in many parts of the world. Silk was in such a great demand, that it became a staple of pre-industrial international trade. In fact, its trade was so extensive that the major set of trade routes between Europe and Asia came to be known as the Silk Road.
The shimmering appearance of the silk fabric is one of its most charming features. It is due to the triangular prism-like structure of the silk fibre, which allows silk cloth to refract incoming light at different angles, which produces different colors.
Apart from its stunning look, there are also many other reasons why silk is a preferred fabric for the summer months. For instance:
- Silk is breathable. It keeps you cool on hot days and through warm nights.
- Silk regulates body temperature, and preserves your body heat in the cold.
- Silk has impressive moisture wicking properties, keeping you dry and comfortable in any climate, year-round.
- Silk is hypoallergenic, and won’t irritate sensitive skin.
- Silk is lightweight and soft, making it easy to layer under daywear.
- Silk has a natural luster from its smooth threads, giving a beautiful appearance.
- Silk doesn’t create static, so it does not cling or crease easily.
- Silk fibers are naturally elastic, and can stretch up to 20% without breaking.
In addition, silk is surprisingly easy to care for and will retain its beauty for years. In fact, that is why silk is so often used in legacy and heirloom pieces that are passed down from generation to generation.
I enjoy buying silk dresses, but I also love designing my own pieces. However, it is a very hard job finding the right fabrics and the exact patterns you want. There are of course a lot of places you can go to buy fabrics, but it is rarely the case that one supplier will have such a vast catalogue that you can get everything you want from just one place, without spending days running around the different shops.
Well, I managed to find the one place where you can find all the fabrics you want and even more! So this week, I have decided to share my secret about where I get my fabrics from. The name of my favourite fabrics company is Tissura. They have such a vast collection of fabrics that it is impossible not to find what you are looking for. Only the silk fabrics, for instance, consists of more than 1400 designs. As you can already guess, Tissura is exactly the place from where I am getting the silk fabric from my next summer dress.
I love the plain silk fabrics, but the most trendy designs this summer are again the floral ones. As I have mentioned in my previous posts, I am not a huge fan of floral designs. Thus, in the rare cases when I am looking for floral fabric I always have something specific in mind and it is nearly impossible to offer me anything different from what I have decided I want.
However, when I started browsing through Tissura’s new silk floral collection a few days ago, I liked so many designs that I am still unable to decide which one to pick for my next long, backless silk dress. I want to decorate the dress with some crystals at the waist, so I need to be supper careful with which design I choose. But how can I decide on just one when I need to choose from over 1400 amazing designs?? Here are some of my top picks:
Well, I will continue my browsing through Tissura’s online shop and you can also help me by sending me an Instagram DM with your favourite design.
